Capturing all the Government commemorations and events, in the UK and around the world, alongside those delivered by a range of partners, this publication will be a lasting reminder of how we remembered the First World War.
The First World War was a global, industrialised conflict on an unprecedented scale, touching the lives of many millions. One hundred years later, the centenary commemorations brought people together to honour the sacrifice and service of those who were part of the ‘war to end all wars’.
As well as the large-scale events commemorating some of the major battles of the First World War, a diverse range of other activities took place. These included projects funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund, activities organised by the Imperial War Museums’ Centenary Partnership, the ground-breaking artistic programme delivered by 14-18 NOW, war memorial restoration and educational work run by Historic England and the Commonwealth War Graves Commission – and a multitude of poignant events from communities and groups around the UK.
