St.Michael’s has an ancient Saxon tower, which once housed a fully-ringable peal. To protect the masonry, the six bells were rehung for ‘chiming only’, the bells being stationary. Not normally featuring in a change-ringer’s diary, the bells are rarely heard, but the opportunity arose to join in the Armistice 100 grand sequence of bells all over Oxford. Accordingly a slow toll of 100 strokes (on a continental pattern) was chimed, interspersed with the Gregorian chant Requiem Aeternam.
